    EDUCATION


    Camiguin may just be a small island; nevertheless, it has three colleges, namely: Fatima College of Camiguin (FCC), Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC), with a satellite campus and Camiguin School of Arts and Trades (CSAT) and a technical education offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). A complete secondary and elementary education is available as well, both in private and public. There are also day care centers which offer nursery and pre-school education.


    The province has a total number of 68 day care centers managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and 56 public and private elementary schools. There are 13 secondary schools, 3 private institutions and the rest are government-owned. There is one special school, which accommodates to the underprivileged or special children, the Family-to-Family School and Farm. It is managed by a Non-Government Organization (NGO).

    There is likewise another sector, the Alternative Learning System Education Sector which takes active part in helping out the illiterates and less literate individuals to become efficient members in the community through the Literacy Cum livelihood.

    Schools in Camiguin

    Camiguin Polytechnic State College Camiguin was part of Misamis Oriental from 1946 to 1958. Then in 1958, it became a sub-province and in 1968, a full-fledged province with Mambajao as its provincial capital.

    In 1980, Camiguin School of Arts and Trade was established as a Secondary Trade School. Central Mindanao University and Mindanao Polytechnic State College also established Satellite Schools in the Province.
    Seeing the need to establish a State College that would cater to the needs of the youth of the province, Congressman Pedro P. Romualdo authored Republic Act 7923 which was presented in congress on July 25, 1994.
    On Febuary 24, 1995, by virtue of Republic Act 7923, the Mindanao Polytechnic State College-Camiguin Campus, Central Mindanao University-Catarman Campus and Camiguin School of Arts and Trades, were integrated into one State College, the Camiguin Polytechnic State College with its Main Campus located at Balbagon, Mambajao, Camiguin.
    After a Brief transition period, CPSC officially opened its door to higher education in June 1996.
    From then on, CPSC has been under the Leadership of the following Presidents:

    To date, CPSC strives to provide professional, technical and special instruction for special purposes and to promote research and extension services, advanced studies and progressive leadership in Agriculture, Forestry, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and other relevant studies through quality instruction.

    Camiguin Institute was founded by the late Don Leon Borromeo in 1922. Government recognition and approval for operation of a complete Elementary and Secondary courses was received in 1927. When World War II broke out in 1941.

    Father John Pollock, S.J. re-opened the school after the war through the help of Jesuit priests. The sisters of Religious of Virgin Mary (RVM) took charge in administering Camiguin Institute. Rev. Arthur F. Shea, S.J. changed the name of chool to FATIMA JUNIOR COLLEGE.

    Government recognition for complete course was given by the Department of Education # 390 s. 1956. General Clerical Course in college got its recognition in May 26,1956.

    In 1958, through the help of Irish missionary priest in the island, Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM) changed the name of school into FATIMA COLLEGE OF CAMIGUIN for the identification with the registration to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) due to offering four year degree course.
